Last year, Laura Wearn (Charlotte, North Carolina) birdied the final hole of regulation to force a playoff with Haylee Hartford in the sixth annual IOA Golf Classic. Wearn then made par on the first extra hole for the win, her third career victory on the Epson Tour.
“I played eighteen yesterday and immediately remember the shots I hit last year, so I have a lot of good vibes going into this week. I hope I can have another good week and maybe do it again,” said Wearn. “I think for me there are a lot of tough tee shots, the course is pretty narrow and it’s more of a placement course. Some tee shots in the past I have struggled with are holes three and seven. Now it’s just about playing smart and laying up to give myself a good chance to hit the fairway.”
In 2016, Wearn claimed her first win on the Epson Tour at the Gosling’s Dark ‘n Stormy® Classic at Atlanta National Golf Club by one shot over Madelene Sagstrom (Enkoping, Sweden), who set the all-time single-season earnings record with her sixth top five finish in seven events. Wearn closed at 6-under, 210 after an even-par final day.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all in Atlanta, I had back surgery almost a year before. I was just happy to be back playing but winning gave me so much confidence and made me realize I can play with everybody out here and when I am playing my best I can compete,” she said. “It made me hungry to win more tournaments. I hope I can get a couple this year because there is no better feeling than winning out here.”
