This week the Epson Tour travels to a new event in Hurricane, Utah. It seems fitting that Copper Rock Golf Course extended their sponsor invite to Utah native and Dixie State alumna Haley Sturgeon (Layton, Utah). Sturgeon was the 2020 Utah PGA Omega Women’s Player of the Year and currently competes on the Cactus Tour.
“It's really awesome. I played the course in the spring about ten times and then coming on site with all the signage everywhere is amazing,” said Sturgeon. “I was playing in a scramble event here for the Utah section and I started to talk to John and told him a little bit more about myself about my history and I couldn’t thank him enough for believing in me and providing this opportunity.”
Sturgeon may be a trailblazer for women’s golf in the state of Utah, between playing on the first high school women’s golf team and inaugural golf team at Dixie State, but golf was not always the number one sport in her life.
“I played several other sports and those always came before golf. I actually tried out for the University of Utah’s cheer team. When that didn’t work out my high school golf coach asked me if I was ready to take this seriously and that was when I started to really focus in on this dream,” said Sturgeon.
Seeing the game continue to grow in Utah through her personal experiences, this week she will compete on the Road to the LGPA at Copper Rock Golf Course.
“It's so great to see the movements continuing to grow. As a part of the first high school golf team and them competing for Dixie State, just seeing all the women's events just growing and growing, it's just it's amazing to see,” said Sturgeon.
