Texan Maddie McCrary hit the first ball of the 2021 LPGA Q-Series on the Crossings Course at Magnolia Grove, making the most of a pristine golf course and prime scoring conditions. The 25-year-old from suburban Dallas carded a 5-under 67 in Thursday’s first round and is tied for second after 18 holes of this 144-hole marathon.
“I know it was a nice start. Just really felt really smooth. Irons are feeling really good,” said McCrary with a broad smile on her face. “I’ve just been working on my alignment the past month and that's pretty much it. Ball striking feels really good. It feels like I can go at like any pin and attack it, so it's been fun.”
McCrary first earned LPGA Tour status for the 2018 season but struggled to gain her footing, making just five cuts in her first two years on Tour. She has played full-time on the Epson Tour for the last two seasons, with her seven top-20 finishes highlighted by a tie for third at the 2020 IOA Championship presented by Morongo Casino Resort & Spa. A strong start here in Mobile has given her a massive confidence boost as she looks to the long task ahead.
“My confidence is out the roof right now, especially after today,” said McCrary. “I just know what I need to go work on, hit a few putts, and then hopefully make a few more.”
