Fatima Fernandez Cano (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) ended two rounds at –7 overall, one stroke off the lead. Cano went -5 on Saturday, highlighted by five birdies and no bogeys. This weekend, she’ll not only be searching for her second win on the Epson Tour, but also to stay in the top-10 in the Race for the Card.
“I have been hitting a lot of greens in regulation this week, I only hit 13 today but yesterday I hit 17,” said Fernandez Cano. “My misses were very good, and I think I missed four greens where I was basically putting off the fringe. I need a few more putts to drop but overall, I think I played some very solid golf.
Last season, Cano won the IOA Championship presented by Morongo Casino Resort & Spa where she captured her first win on the “Road to the LPGA.” Despite testing positive for coronavirus twice and being forced to miss two events (FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship and Epson Tour Championship), Fernandez Cano worked her way into the top five courtesy of six top-15 performances across eight starts.
“It feels great to be here. I love this place, I have a great host family here, I really like the course, and you can tell the members here really support the tournament,” said Cano. “I really hated not getting to play here last year, I think I am taking a little revenge on it this year hopefully, we will see tomorrow, but so far so good.”
