DAVIDSON, N.C. — The seventh stop on the 2019 “Road to the LPGA” takes the Symetra Tour to River Run Country Club in the Tar Heel State for the eighth annual Symetra Classic from May 15-17.
From 2012-2016, the Symetra Classic was contested at Raintree Country Club in Charlotte. It then spent one year at Atlanta National Golf Club in Milton, Ga., before returning to North Carolina in the 2018 season.
“This event has really found a home in the greater Charlotte area, giving Symetra the opportunity to showcase their brand in an important business market to them, while continuing to demonstrate their commitment to women’s golf,” said Mike Nichols, the Chief Business Officer of the Symetra Tour. “We are excited to head back to River Run Country Club and appreciate the welcoming nature of the entire Davidson community. It will truly be a week to celebrate Symetra and the Tour as a whole.”
Greeting the 144-player field in Davidson, N.C. is a total purse of $175,000. Individuals are set to compete in a 54-hole stroke play format with a cut to the low 60 players and ties after 36 holes.
“Having the next group of LPGA Tour superstars competing at River Run Country Club is great for the area and membership is really looking forward to welcoming them,” said Jon Show, the Tournament Director for the Symetra Classic. “Since last year, we have added some outstanding components to the week’s festivities and can’t wait to get things started.”
Defending champion Jenny Haglund (Karlstad, Sweden) is not among the competitors, as she finished tied for 20th at the inaugural LPGA Q-Series to earn Priority List Category 14 status for the 2019 LPGA Tour season. The victory was one of four top-10 results for Haglund last season.
"In my rookie year on the Symetra Tour, it was really surreal to win in just my fourth event," Haglund said. "Symetra has done a lot for the women's professional game and is now in their eighth year as the entitlement sponsor for the Tour. It was an honor to take home the Symetra Classic title behind such a generous outpouring of support and dedication to helping all players aim to achieve their dreams."
First and second round action gets underway at 7:30 a.m. ET off No. 1 and No. 10 tees. Meanwhile, the final round will start at 8:30 a.m. with all groups heading off No. 1 tee in twosomes.
