Round Two Update
PRATTVILLE, Alabama, September 24, 2017 - The second-round of the Guardian Championship resumed on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. and leader Yu Liu (Beijing, China) played her final six holes of the round. She dropped to 11-under, but still maintained a one-stroke lead heading into the final-round. Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Illinois) remained in second place at 10-under while Erynne Lee (Silverdale, Washington) stayed in third place at 9-under.
The second-round finished at 9:43 a.m.
Liu, Szokol and Lee will tee at 12:35 p.m. in the final-round of the Guardian Championship. The final-round will begin at 10:45 a.m.
Liu started from the fourth hole and made par. She made two bogeys and one birdie over her final five holes to close at 11-under.
“I’m very excited to be where I am right now,” said Liu, who three-putted the last to drop a shot. “I was really excited last night after the round even though we didn’t get to finish. I’ll take where I am and I’m just ready for the final-round.”
Liu was on her way back to the hotel after completing her second round just after 9:15 a.m.
“I’ll probably get some breakfast, it was a really early start this morning,” said Liu. “I didn’t have a ton of time to work on putting so I’ll probably work on that a little more before my final round.”
Liu ranks eighth on the Volvik Race for the Card money list and has one win this season at the Tullymore Classic. A win this afternoon would put her on the cusp of earning an LPGA Tour card for 2018.
“It would really mean a lot (to win),” said Liu. “A win would really go a long way, but I’m going to try to focus on one shot at a time and try my best to win.”
Liu has posted rounds of 66-67 on Capitol Hill through the first two rounds.
Daniela Darquea (Quito, Ecuador), No. 10 on Volvik Race for LPGA, closed her second round with a 66 to move from T41 to a tie for fifth.
Yu Liu Moves into Lead as Play Suspends in Rd 2 at Guardian Championship
PRATTVILLE, Alabama, September 23, 2017 - Yu Liu (Beijing, China) made six birdies over her first 12 holes to move to the top of the leaderboard at 12-under as play was suspended at 4:40 p.m. due to lightning in the area. The horns blew to bring players off the course and they never returned as the storm cell remained over Capitol Hill at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. There are still 20 groups and 60 players that did not finish the second round.
The second-round will resume at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday and the final-round will begin no earlier than 10:45 a.m. Once the second round concludes, the cut will be made. The estimated finish time is now 5:30 p.m. and the trophy ceremony will take place on the 18th green.
Liu started on the back nine and made four straight birdies between holes 13 and 16. She will resume on hole four on Sunday in the second round and has six holes left.
“It was a solid round today, I hit it close and was able to convert all the birdie putts,” said Liu as players scattered once the round was called for the night. “I wish I could have just kept it going and finished the round, but I’m ready to go lower Sunday.”
Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Illinois) followed a 9-under, 63 on Friday with a 1-under, 71 on Saturday and is the clubhouse leader at 10-under. Erynne Lee, a two-time winner, posted a 6-under, 66 in the morning and is 9-under, 135 through two rounds.
