Nielson started playing golf the early age of seven years old. She enjoys reading and learning to play the guitar. Something you may not know about Nielson is that she was in the local Nashville productions of the Wizard of Oz and The Music Man.

- Four-time U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifier (2007, 2009-2011).
- Four-time Tennessee Women’s Amateur Player of the Year (2008-2011).
- Winner of 2010 Tennessee Women’s Amateur.
- Winner of the 2011 Women’s Southern Amateur.
- Named First-Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference in 2008 and three-time All-ACC selection (2009-2011) while at the University of Virginia.
- A 2009 Golfweek All-American Third Team selection.
- Named 2009 honorable mention NGCA All-American.
- Two-time All-American honorable mention selection by NGCA and Golfweek (2010-2011).
