The Wait is Over

The wait is over as this week marks the highly anticipated start to the Symetra Tour’s 2013 season. The inaugural Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club will take place February 22-24 at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.

The 120-player event offers a purse of $100,000 and will award $15,000 to the tournament winner after three days of competition. A tournament cut will be made after 36 holes to the low 70 scores and ties.

This week marks the first time since the 2006 Tucson Duramed FUTURES Golf Classic that the Symetra Tour will stop in Arizona. Several Symetra Tour members will have the opportunity to tee-it-up close to home including Arizona residents Sara Brown, Blair O’Neal, and Cara Freeman.

Also included in this week’s field are a couple of players who narrowly missed earning their 2013 LPGA Tour cards through the Volvik Race for the Card. Last season, Jenny Suh came up just shy at No. 11 while Jaclyn Sweeney fell at No. 13.

There will be an extra incentive to play well this week as the winner of the inaugural Symetra Tour event will earn an exemption into the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup. Set to take place March 14-17 at Wildfire Golf Club at Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup marks the first domestic event on the 2013 LPGA schedule.
