Counting down the Symetra Tour's top 12 stories in 2012: No. 12

Over the next 12 days leading up to the new year, symetratour.com will count down the top-12 most memorable stories of the tour’s 2012 season. To kick-off the top-12  at #12 in 2012 series, the Symetra Tour takes a look back at Marcela Leon’s impressive win on Golf Channel’s Big Break Atlantis.

Monterey, Mexico native and Symetra Tour veteran Marcela Leon received her “Big Break” this season by outlasting fellow Tour member Selanee Henderson in the championship round 5&4 to be crowned the winner of Big Break Atlantis.

"I've worked hard through the years, but for some reason, I haven't been able to achieve my goal," said an emotional Leon after winning the series. "This just makes it better and everything sweeter. This makes all of the hard work, all of the frustrations...I am just thankful."

"This experience has meant a lot to me," said Henderson following the conclusion of the championship match. "I have grown a lot. I've learned how to deal with my nerves so that I can play like the player I know that I am. I will take that with me, not only for the rest of my career, but for the rest of my life."

As champion of Big Break Atlantis, Leon received one of the most valuable prize packages in Big Break series history, highlighted by an invitation to compete in the 2012 LPA Kingsmill Championship and $50,000 in cash. In addition, Leon received an Adams Golf endorsement contract, which included $10,000 in cash; $10,000 shopping spree to Dick’s Sporting Goods; $10,000 car rental credit from Avis Car Rental and a return trip for two to Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Five additional Symetra Tour members competed in the series including Gloriana Soto who made it an all-Symetra Tour final three. Other players including Anya Alvarez, Christina Stockton, Allison Micheletti and Shannon Fish.
