SANYA (China), Oct 31, 2012 - Golfers from the Ladies European Tour, Ladies Asian Golf Tour and China LPGA Tour took time out from their preparations for the Sanya Ladies Open in Hainan, China, on Tuesday by visiting a local Welfare House for children aged 2-10.
The players delivered gifts of books, toys, household goods, clothes and food to the orphanage, which cares largely for children with disabilities.
Many of the players said that they hoped their visit would bring awareness of the orphans to the local community and increase support.
The defending Sanya Ladies Open champion Frances Bondad and recent winner of the Spanish and French Opens, Stacey Keating of Australia, were joined by fellow LET players Felicity Johnson, Holly Aitchison, Stacy Lee Bregman and Nikki Garrett.
CLPGA members Lin Xiyu, Shi Yu Ting, Yang Tao Li and Lu Yuexia, brought greetings from the Chinese players and spent time playing with the children.
Bubbly Thai player Patcharajutar Kongkraphan was particularly adept at interacting and bringing smiles to the faces of the youngsters and was joined by fellow LAGT members Lin Tzu Chi, Tavee Tiffany and Numa Gulyanamitta.
Frances Bondad, who sponsors a number of children in the Philippines, addressed the children and said: "Thank you for giving us the opportunity to come to your Welfare House. Through our influence at golf tournaments around the world, we hope that we can share our joy. We are very fortunate to play golf and hope that these children will get similar opportunities."
Chinese national team member, Shi Yu-ting, 13, said: "I was very happy today to play with the children in their home. In fact, giving these children love is not hard, just a little care for them and they really warm to you. I would like to see more people care for these children and for them to have a warm family. I hope they can have a better future and healthy growth."
Lu Yuexia also hoped to raise awareness and commented: "Charity is a very happy thing. We may have a personal weakness, but if we can pool our strengths we will help more vulnerable children."
Yalong Bay Mangrove Tree Resort, the Official Reception Hotel for the Sanya Ladies Open, along with Yalong Bay Golf Club, provided gifts of books, stationery, hats, coconut shell necklaces, sand toys, fresh fruit, puzzles and the hotel chefs cooked a special large cake, which was enjoyed by all of the children.
The president of the welfare house, Wang Shaomin, expressed his appreciation to the tournament organisers and players for visiting and using their influence to call more attention to the orphans.
